Today's plan is go swim at the lake as soon as all the chores are done. Since they haven't
seemed to notice what needs to be done, I made a list so they could take the initiative. When
they didn't move fast enough, I got bored and started noticing more things to add to the list...
the list became quite extensive. Eventually the dishes were washed, their toys and clothes
put away, the floor swept and scrubbed, the shower and toilet cleaned, and the trash
taken out. Maybe when they read this blog post later on
they'll remember that being helpful in the first place is more pleasant.
Michigan is the "Land of the Lakes", but we stayed in Michigan City which is in Indiana.
The tip of Lake Michigan actually touches land of four states. The water was cold, but
it felt so good! Outside it was 91 with a heat index of 113. The beach was very shallow
and most people were in the water. The lifeguards actually wouldn't let anyone swim where
they couldn't touch the ground, so rather than swim out the the bouy and back, I swam
parallel to the beach and back again, all head-up, so I got a nice shoulder workout. Now
we can say we swam in one of the Great Lakes.
**SAT 7/20 DRIVE Wisconsin
We drove 329 mi to the only campground between Madison and Minneapolis that we could find a reservation for. Wisconsin license plates say "America's Dairyland" and is a larger producer of milk and cheese. We learned produces 35% of our nation's cheese at our stop at the "MouseHouse" -- we just had to stop here despite the rain when we saw the billboard.
We are thinking happy thoughts for Susan & Bernie's 50th Anniversary today. They are enjoying New Hampshire and Massachusetts still.
**SUN 7/21 DRIVE --> Minnesota & North Dakota
We left early at 7am for our 635 mile drive today. We surpassed 10k miles for the trip today! Chris honked the horn on the highway (in the middle of nowhere) 10x to commemorate it. Chris got a wild idea last night while admiring the sticker map on our motorhome which led to our long drive. We were just going to drive through the corner of North Dakota, but instead now we are driving all the way to Minot so we can take a Jeep day trip to Canada tomorrow. Why not... what's a few hundred extra miles at this point?
Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." When I asked the kids what they want to remember about this state Marissa said it looks like the chef hat. We also noted milk is a large export, and the Mississippi river originates from here. (*Further research tells me that California and Wisconsin are the largest producers of milk, but I'm sure it's an important part of Minnesota's economy.)
Marissa is wearing an eyepatch today. I'm glad she could rest her eye today on the drive. Apparently I must have scratched her eye when cleaning her face with a paper towel last night. It should heal in 1-3 days.
The big exciting thing about today is that Chris is nearly finished with his paper that's due in a couple days. That means he can finally relax for a bit.
