QUARANTINE back to school

August 17-18 -- Last minute back to school prep, back to school party

Not really knowing what the new school year would bring, we waited to prepare and our back to school party was simple.

Monday morning, Piper swapped her chromebook for a new touchscreen one at a table set up in Hillsdale's MPR doorway,  and Marissa did supply pick up from Mrs. Luna at Fuerte traffic circle.  We also stopped at Staples to pick up the desk pads I ordered and they easily talked me into a few more school supply items.

The girls were very excited to get their back to school supplies and get set up for the new year.  I was going to wait for Wednesday night after day one but they REALLY wanted to get organized ahead of time so we celebrated Tuesday night.  They got reading pillows, pencil boxes, white boards, white board markers, folders, and a few other random items.  No backbacks or lunchboxes this year. They are
already set with earbuds from quarantine school.

There was much excitement over getting supplies organized and receiving class schedules for Addisyn & Piper via email at the same time.

Everyone is anxious and nervous, and antsy about getting the "bell" schedule and class/teacher schedules.  It's been confusing trying to figure out what's going to happen with little information.

I told Addisyn and Piper that the first day will be like "orientation" day and everyone is going to have kinks and tech issues to work out, so don't worry if you don't know what to expect or if you have a tech issue.  (Addisyn's school email is not working so we are already brainstorming what to do about that.)

Karen worked at Fuerte in 100* heat for supply pick up and meet the teacher, hot and physically exhausting, wearing a mask the whole time, but fun.  I took a new headshot for my first PTA board position this year--I am now Fuerte PTA's secretary and use 2 computers so I can Zoom on one and type notes on the other.

Wednesday August 19 -- 1st DAY OF SCHOOL DL AT HOME
-They "went" to school barefoot!
-We had time for a pancake breakfast to kick off the day happy.
-We took the traditional 1st day of school pictures in front yard, sans shoes or backpacks
-They were successfully organized and logged in on time
-I'm at home with a quiet house (just like when they were actually at school) so I can blog again for the
 first time in a month.
-Kids were instructed to work out their problems on their own before coming to me for tech help.  The kitchen is closed during class time.
-Addisyn & Piper are one schedule for middle school, rotating classes every 45 min, 8:55am to 3:00pm, with 45min lunch at 11:50.
-Marissa's schedule for 2nd grade with Mrs. Luna is Zoom supervision 9am to 12:10, then lunch, and independent work after lunch.

-It's sad that they can't use their vocal cords much.
-I should be respectful about when *I* eat since they can see and hear me...I usually eat early and not on a schedule.
-Today I am going to volunteer for PTA & supply drive-through at Fuerte for an hour so they will be on their own and self-sufficient for an hour or so at home alone.

Perks of DL:
-Addisyn was bored during her zooms and drank a lot of water... good thing there's no line for the bathroom here :-D
-You can fart in class and no one will know.
-Addisyn can count her dance & acro classes as PE

Grammy & Grampy took the kids out for Baskin Robbins ice cream after school to celebrate the 1st day.

After their 2nd day, we were dying to get out of the house and I was easily talked into going to get new Beta fish for our empty tanks.

With all this screen time, we made sure Addisyn's glasses prescription is still good (yes it was and we get a free pair of glasses covered every year by insurance).  Funny she picked the same frames as Grammy.

Our first DL field trip! For Papa Dave's birthday, we took school with us to Fiesta Island.  We zoomed in the car on the drive there, then in the motorhome/trailer, and took a looooong recess and PE ;-)

Justin & Michelle engagement

Justin surprised Michelle with a love song he composed and then proposed.  The cover story was that we were doing family bdays at our house, and then he just started playing piano as he might normally do.  Her parents were hiding around the corner until the moment he knelt down to keep her from getting suspicious.

He may have teased her with a Ring pop.

QUARANTINE Summer

Piper's Girl Scout troop wrapped up their bronze award project, bringing public awareness to the needs of the local animal shelter and teaching other girls how to make cat and dog toys to donate.

6/19-30 -- Summer has begun

new chore charts, TEDx & journals... it's too much, have to adapt it again...

C&K separate trips to visit our Arizona friends.  First time on a plane wearing masks.  (Masks not required in AZ)

June 26-28 -- KOA -- just us, pool reservations, sleeping in, Grammy Susan brought Jacob & Megan for Saturday so we swam and rode bikes/scooters with them.  Everyone slept in Sunday morning.

7/2 Cousins Sibling Swap, Skateboard at La Mesita Park

7/3 Swim & BBQ at Matt & Marcy's

Piper got a new phone! She said a bit agitated, "Addisyn left her phone in my room and the alarm went off."  Chris had set a "red alert" alarm at 8am... hahaha!

------------------------------------------------
Family Vacation!  We had to get out of California for a bit, Florida had the right weather, lower Covid rates, and less restrictive mask rules.

July 4 -- HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, travel day.  We watched fireworks from our patio/balcony of condo, and cooked dinner at the condo.
July 5-10 -- We...
-floated in the lazy river daily
-walked across the street for a beach day
-spent a day at Big Kahunas waterpark, where it took Marissa an hour to work up to agreeing to the big slides, but then she LOVED it
-frequently played charades as a family in the condo at night after dinner
-ropes course for the kids
-beach bar for the adults
-rented a kayak & SUPs, and made the mistake of going downwind too far, about a mile in first hour of our rental, then on the way back the wind picked up and kids got tired... we had to tow them back.  Marissa was in the double kayak with Chris to start, then wanted a ride on the SUP, which was fine with me at the time... It was a brutal 1-1.5 hours back upwind.  At least we had a good workout for the week!
Saturday, July 11 -- Travel Day home

-------------------------------------------------
Back at home again, we picked up school yearbooks (they were late, due to delays so many businesses are facing due to shutdowns, such as manufacturing shortages and lack of staffing), did drive-by birthdays, outdoor socially-distanced activities, and refused to quarantine from family.

Girl Scout camps were cancelled but the schools offered camps so the girls did one week each: Addisyn enjoyed Theater camp--they wore masks on stage and put on a show for a video camera in an empty auditorium.  Piper enjoyed fitness and makerspace (and it was a great introduction to her new school so starting 6th grade in the fall was a bit easier).  Marissa did "Camp Fuerte" for all-around fun with Ms. Mungia.

-----------------------------------
August 4-9 Beach Camping at South Carlsbad, 5 nights
We enjoyed freedom to socialize with our friends in fresh air without the muzzle.  We lucked out in site 180 next to the ramp so we could get to the beach conveniently.  Chris had to Zoom into work for a bit, but we enjoyed free time and friends most of the time.
-Set up tent and chairs on a cliff of rocks

*Addisyn first classes with Expressions.  She did acro on our first night camping in the MH, moving the computer up and down depending on what they were doing so the teacher could see her in the tight space.  The rest of us tried to stay outside and out of the way.  She missed the first Lyrical Praise class on Thursday bc she slipped and fell on the jetty rocks less than an hour before class was to start and she was in a lot of pain.  She did Jazz in the MH on Friday but w/o jazz shoes (b/c she didn't want to mess them up).
*Thursday, Piper and Karen drove home to check on our animals and go to swim practice.  It was a windy drive back and forth in the Jeep on the freeway.  Because of Covid, we are not allowed to change and shower at the pool, so we made do using the water tank on the Jeep to wash our hair and rinse off.

August 12-16 -- back to back beach camping, this time 4 nights at Silver Strand
We are SO lucky to be at the beach when temps hit over 100 in east county!
Cousins and grammy & grampy came to visit --fun fun.  But they had a long walk to get in bc the parking lot was so full they had to close it (we gave them a ride back to their car at the end of the day).
*Piper & Karen still went to swim practice on Thur & Sat bc it is the end of our season so we didn't want to miss.  We also drove a mile up to the shores to meet Dani & Nancy for a little "Shark Bait Momma" ballet leg performance in the ocean on Friday.

Piper's Girl Scout Bridging to Cadettes (Sunday 8/16/20)
We packed up a tad earlier than our leisurely norm from camping so Piper could get to her GS bridging ceremony.  Karen drove her direct from the beach to Seaport Village with the bikes racked on the Jeep.  It was nice to see everyone in person and she got her new Cadette GS uniform.  We are so grateful to Jolinda for being her GS leader and keeping the troop active even through quarantine.

Marissa's Girl Scout Bridging event was fun but everyone came at different times throughout the day.  She moved up from Daisies to Brownies.  (8/22/20)

Marissa then hosted the first "in-person" meeting for her troop as new Brownies, earning the Making Games badge, drive-through style.

Addisyn took her hamster Oreo to the vet.  It ended up costing her a bit more than she expected with the medicine on top of the office visit cost, so she made a payment plan with her mom and learned great lessons in pet care and financial responsibility.

August birthdays-- Stacy, Marcy, Grma Mickey, and Papa Dave each got their own cake, and passed around the hair dryer to blow out their candles--Covid-style.
