Chris turned in his paper. Yay! He gets 2 days off to not think about school.
It was an hour and a half drive to Canada for lunch; we drove through Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and then another hour and a half back south. It was mostly a single lane highway past farms and John Deere stores. No traffic, unless you consider the farm tractor on the other side of the street.
We found a little hometown restaurant across from the grain silos where they were filling train cars. The waitress chatted with us and she said when she moved there, it was quite an adjustment from big city life to small town life.
The US customs inspector quickly checked inside the back of the Jeep--the kids wouldn't have had to get out except that we can't open the back of the Jeep with the rack on. He probably didn't have anything better to do at such a small port of entry. It's probably mostly delivery trucks that go here. When questioned about the reason for our visit, we told them we wanted to "explore small town Canada," because telling them the purpose of our trip was "stickers" would have been awkward *ha!
To pass the time while driving, I researched facts about North Dakota:
-Capital: Bismark
-State bird: Meadowlark
-State flower is NOT a sunflower, although 40% of US sunflower products come from here.
-Official beverage: milk
-The word "Dakota" means friend.
-Surprisingly, the Bison is NOT an official state symbol (there is NO official state animal)
We also found a Scandinavian Village and had to stop in honor of our heritage on Chris' side of the family.

The North Dakota State Fair is this week in Minot. Bull and Bronco riding competitions are tonight so we went. We had fun. The kids didn't want to leave the competition or the fair. We let them play a few carnival games and one activity too. I tried the hanging bar challenge but the bar spins--I did it for 50 sec, but needed 80 seconds to win (It's super hard--only 14 people won this week).
We are finally home at 9:40pm and it was still light out. We are on the cusp of a time zone.
