Chris has fond memories of his JEEP during his bachelor days and has been wanting one for a long time. Knowing we'd need a tow vehicle for a motorhome was a good excuse to get one. Needing a 4-door to fit a family of 5, there wasn't anything of value on the used market, so we ordered new. It is pretty cool that the factory sticker says "Built for Christopher Rand" on it! It is a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4x4 which means it has all the off-road features he'll need. I call it the "Toy car" since it is an extra just for fun adventures. We picked it up on July 23rd. The girls have mixed feelings about the wind and their hair. Chris wasted no time getting the the hard top off so he could enjoy it while the weather was still nice. It certainly felt strange driving it down the street with no doors--I was literally laughing all the way down the street driving it that way!
After ten years with our trailer and knowing we'd want a motorhome for our cross-country excursion we are planning for 2019, we'd been looking at the different models and walking RV shows for over a year. Chris did some great research on what models were available and where before we went seriously shopping. Turns out, getting a bunkhouse with a front drop-down bed are few and far-between. We found some to look at in San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties and test drove one the last weekend of August. We looked at new and used models of the Hurricane by Thor. Chris worked his negotiating magic, and the next day we threw the kids in the car and headed north for another test drive with intent to buy. We bought a 2015 Hurricane 34J (built after October 2014 since they increased their towing capacity mid-model year). It is 34' long. We took delivery and brought it home on 9/12. Its inaugural trip was beach camping the very next weekend at Silver Strand. It took me the whole week to pack it and get it organized since we had to figure out new places to put all our things. I wanted to be able to drive it, so I practiced in an empty parking lot the first day, and drove home from Silver Strand too--it's like driving a big boat on land!
Emptying out the Gearbox Fifth Wheel Trailer and using it for the last time was a weird feeling. It's amazing how much extra clutter we accumulated over the years. It was nice to go through it and clean out. It's like cleaning out a 2nd home. I got some giant storage bins from Costco and moved all our desert gear to the enclosed trailer. Seeing the trailer cleaned out reminded me of when we bought it--it'd never been empty since. We took lots of pictures and posted ads in a couple places to sell it; we've had some interest, but no serious buyer yet...hoping to find that right price/buyer combination soon as desert season (prime sales season) is starting soon.
