Piper's team traveled to the Cactus Classic synchro meet in Arizona... road trip in the team van!
Karen co-chaperoned with another mom (Shannon, Katelyn's mom) who has a 15 passenger van. The girls were so excited! What a super team bonding opportunity. The 8 girls are ages 9-12yrs. Piper made fun little Valentine goodie bags for the drive out on Friday. The girls land-drilled with their music every hour along the way and at all the stoplights when we got into town (6+ hour drive to Chandler, AZ). I kept a text group updating the girls' parents of our progress and fun times along the way and all weekend.
We drove straight to the pool to scope it out and land drill on deck just before sunset so they could get their bearings and ease the anxiousness of the unknown.
There was more team bonding in the two mini-suites at the hotel. Each room had two queen beds in a bedroom for 4 girls each and a pull-out couch for chaperones. (I packed an air mattress just in case the pull out sucked, but it was okay). There was an early morning (still dark out!) wake-up call for figures Saturday morning (I love the sunrise pictures in the pool), then routines in the afternoon. Coach Kirsten and everyone congregated in one room for knox and make-up mid-day Saturday.
They performed so well! Here is a nice shot of Piper up high on a boost during their routine. Their music is the theme song for the movie Top Gun.
Coach Julee was on site as a judge for other events and came to critique and celebrate with the girls after their performance.
Awards after sunset. It was a full day! Team got 1st! Piper got 4th in her figures age group (out of about 30).
There was no de-knoxing allowed on site, so we headed to dinner with their hair still done. Celebrating at the hotel pool was fun because they could play in the pool without coaches telling them what to do!
