Addisyn 1st grade, 1st progress report

It was parent-teacher conference time this November, marking the end of 1st trimester and progress report time.  Addisyn is right on track in most areas for 1st grade. 


READING: S+  She reads at grade level, decodes words, and understands what she reads.  She knows approx 50 high frequency words.  She can read Dr. Seuss Beginner books (like Green Eggs and Ham, and Fly Guy books).

WRITING: S  This is the area she needs the most motivation on.  I think the idea of writing a whole page is daunting to her in that she has to think "bigger" in terms of making a story make sense, there's more opportunity for imperfection, and her hand gets tired from holding her pencil improperly.  She still prefers to write easy sentences, but does well on her spelling tests.  Her teacher wants her to practice writing more, so we will work on that during homework time.

LISTENING and SPEAKING: S+  Addisyn engages in conversation with appropriate verbal responses and can use words to express herself.

MATHEMATICS: S+  She can figure out different ways to solve a math problem (as in count fingers, or use manipulatives, a number line, or ten-frame).

SCIENCE / HEALTH: S+  She knows all the parts of an insect.

HISTORY / SOCIAL SCIENCE: S+  We enjoy hearing her retell events of history, like when the Pilgrims left England because they didn't want to do what the King wanted so they got on a big ship and many people got sick or fell off, but then they came to America and made a new government.

FINE ARTS: S+  Addisyn likes creating things.  She will happily spend much time making things or setting up her paper before writing anything on it.

PHYS ED: S  She doesn't run as much as the other kids during PE.

STUDY AND SOCIAL SKILLS: S+ Addisyn is a well behaved student in the classroom.  She follows directions and gets along with friends. 



We attempt to do homework study time daily, but sometimes we have to squeeze in a spelling review while walking to school because we didn't get to it the afternoon prior.  Her extra curricular activities are minimal, but Addisyn is in a Daisy Girl Scout troop and joined the church "Alleluia Singers" (children's choir) with Piper.  She would like to do dance or gymnastics, but I'm not sure what to do about that.... it already takes 3 hours to do the dinner, bath, bedtime routine, and hopefully we did homework already; so I don't know how to make that happen.  I try to only have her do 30 minutes of homework four days/week, but if she is uncooperative, it can take longer.  Once it took an hour and a half to do a math sheet that should have taken 15-20 min.  And she's good at math!  Another day I spent an hour trying to prep her to write a story, and the story still never got written. Homework time can be aggravating for mommy.

We do walk to school daily, which only takes a few more minutes than driving would, and this mommy doesn't have to deal with carseats or the traffic stress.  A half-mile of daily exercise is also good for this girl who might otherwise prefer a free ride. 

Addisyn has mentioned having trouble focusing her eyes sometimes, so with her teacher's urging, we took her for her annual physical right away.  She has 20/20 vision, and Dr. Cohen could find nothing wrong with her physically, despite all the ailments she reported.  She has complained about her legs, butt, tummy, knees, trigger thumb, headaches....  How am I supposed to know when to believe it?  I know some of it is true, and we have now had discussions about levels of hurt, as in: a gentle hand squeeze is not "hurt", but we will have to pursue this further.  It will be a hassle, but we will have to start a food diary to understand her constant tummy aches, as this one is a constant.

Addisyn stands 3' 10" tall (55%ile) and 46 lbs (52%ile) with clothes on.
